Ohio Valley Medical Center
Founded in 1890 as City Hospital, Ohio Valley Medical Center is in
the heart of downtown Wheeling. It also maintains a division in the
Woodsdale section of the city -- Peterson Rehabilitation Hospital
and Geriatric Center.
Licensed as a specialty hospital, Peterson
specializes in physical rehabilitation, pain management and intermediate
and skilled nursing care. Other specialized services include work
readiness and driver retraining programs.
OVMC and Peterson are accredited by
more than a dozen professional reviewing agencies, including the
Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Peterson also is accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation
of Rehabilitation Facilities.
One of the Ohio Valley's largest employers,
OVMC offers an array of primary and tertiary care services, from
its EMSTAR emergency services and trauma care through rehabilitation
services.
Recognizing the importance of women's
health care, OVMC was the first hospital in Ohio County to open
a women's health center. The Ree Cook-Reiter Women's Center at
OVMC offers outpatient testing in a private setting. Services provided
include mammography, the ABBI System for minimally invasive breast
biopsy, ultrasound, and osteoporosis detection. Also, OVMC's obstetrics
department features modern birthing rooms which provide a homelike,
soothing setting for the mother while maintaining high-tech capabilities.
OVMC's advanced diagnostic capabilities
include magnetic imaging, brain dedicated SPECT imaging and computerized
brain mapping, and heart catheterization. Advanced treatment services
include hyperbaric oxygen therapy, high energy linear accelerator
for cancer treatment, and lithotripsy for the treatment of kidney
stones. Its 225 beds are divided among medical/surgical care, intensive
care, coronary care, psychiatric care, pediatric care, obstetrics
and progressive care.
Sub-surgical specialties include neurosurgery,
obstetrics and gynecology, ear nose and throat, vascular, thoracic,
orthopedic (including joint implants), urology and eye surgery.
OVMC is also a leader in mental health
services. Its Hillcrest Behavioral Health Services offers programs
for adults and adolescents affected by such diverse conditions
as depression, substance abuse, vocational stress and family instability.
More than 250 physicians and dentists
are on staff at OVMC, and a number of them maintain offices at
Valley Professional Center and Valley Professional Center South,
both located adjacent to OVMC.
OVMC has an internal medicine residency,
rotating internship and family practice residency affiliated with
both West Virginia University and West Virginia School of Osteopathic
Medicine. OVMC also has a urology resident -- from WVU and a surgical
resident from Allegheny General Hospital.
An independent two-year program in radiologic
technology is offered at OVMC. West Liberty State College and OVMC
work together to offer a baccalaureate degree in medical technology,
and nursing students from various colleges and institutions participate
in clinical rotations at OVMC. The hospital has professional nursing
students from Wheeling Jesuit University, Franciscan University,
West Virginia Northern Community College, Belmont Technical College,
West Liberty State College and practical nursing students from
B.M. Spurr School of Practical Nursing.
OVMC and Peterson, along with their
sister hospital, East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry,
Ohio are part of the Ohio Valley Health Services and Education
Corp. OVHS&E is a family of healthcare hospitals and facilities
located throughout the Ohio Valley and is affiliated with Allegheny
General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
